I finally saw Batman vs. Superman on Demand yesterday. I wanted to give this movie a chance, since many people trashed Man of Steel – which I thought was good.
But I have to agree with the 28% score at Rotten Tomatoes.
This is simply a mess of a film.
If you care, here are some thoughts from someone who has never read a Superman or Batman comic book:
The movie opens with the murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents. This is unnecessary not only because it’s something we’ve seen in every other Batman movie, but also because they show the exact same scene later on in the movie at a key moment. Okay…
Ben Affleck – passable, but not great.
Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor is annoying, unbelievable, and far too young. Wrong casting.
Holly Hunter: Bad acting, character. Wrong casting.
Lois Lane, who witnesses Jimmy Olsen’s execution from about 5 feet away, basically shows no shock or grief – whatsoever. She even fucks Clark Kent / Superman in a bathtub in the very next scene.
I don’t know why Lawrence Fishburne is in this movie since he has zero to do that matters to the plot.
Kevin Costner: Same thing.
Wonder Woman is rail thin. Why not cast Rhonda Rousey or someone like this? This woman is supposed to be Amazonian. Really. I didn’t buy the skinny model nonsense.
Jimmy Olsen (the photographer from the Daily Planet) in this movie for about 15 seconds before he is shot and killed – which I found unintentionally funny. I also didn’t understand why a supposed professional photojournalist is using a film camera from the 70’s instead of a DSLR.
Lois Lane, who witnesses Olsen’s execution from about 5 feet away, basically shows no shock or grief – whatsoever. She even fucks Clark Kent / Superman in a bathtub in the very next scene.
It’s too long. They could cut out about an hour and it might be better.
It’s unfocused. There’s way too much going on that has nothing to do with the story. They should have focused on the main narrative.
Stupid-ass, fake, Hollywood OS computer operating systems. I hate this. I’m no coder, but I know shit when I see it. Hollywood needs to take a page from Mr. Robot and spend the time making halfway believable screen shots. I can suspend disbelief for superheroes with superpowers – but super-operating-systems piss me off.
Finally, I’ve briefly read some of the criticisms of this film online, which I don’t agree with. Namely:
Some said you don’t see Wayne’s reason and motivation for not liking Superman. You not only see that – they remind you of it every chance they get to the point of it being stupid.
People didn’t like that Batman was violent and using guns. But I thought this was better. He got older and jaded, and him struggling with this a sub-narrative that I actually thought worked because it wasn’t put on too heavily.
